Ingrown hairs usually form in the first few days after you shave or wax your skin, meaning you'll normally notice them in areas where you've recently removed hair. Herpes lesions, on the other hand, can develop independently of hair follicles and can affect you even if you don't shave your facial or pubic hair.

What STD looks like an ingrown hair?
Ingrown hair and pseudofolliculitis
The skin in the genital area is particularly fragile, and ingrown hair can easily occur there as a result of a nonoptimal shaving technique. The bump of ingrown hair is usually small and firm, but it can look like a blister, which makes it look like a herpes lesion.
What does a herpes bump look like?
This leads to red bumps full of white pus built up in the pore to appear on your skin. Genital herpes results from contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Unlike pimples, herpes bumps tend to be clear or yellow and filled with a clear liquid.
Do herpes pop like pimples?
When an outbreak of genital herpes does occur, it usually presents as a patch of small red or white bumps or red ulcers. These lesions are often painful. Genital herpes may also appear on the buttocks or mouth in some cases. The pus-filled blisters will eventually burst, leaving an ulcer-like sore on the skin.
What can be mistaken for herpes?
Herpes symptoms can be mistaken for many other things, including:
- A different STI which causes visible lesions, such as Syphilis or genital warts (HPV)
- Irritation caused by shaving.
- Ingrown hairs.
- Bacterial vaginosis (BV)
- Pimples.
- Yeast infections.
- Haemorrhoids.
- Bug bites.
