A fibroadenoma is an extremely common condition in which a lump or lumps are formed in the breast. These lumps are benign lumps which means they are non cancerous. The lumps will feel slippery to touch and are often compared to feeling like a marble under the skin.

Can fibroadenomas look like cancer on ultrasound?

Background: Breast cancer is among the most common cancers in the world. Ultrasound evaluations of breast have come into attention as an alternative route. Ultrasound features of benign lesions such as fibroadenoma can be overlapping with those in a malignant tumor.

When is fibroadenoma cancerous?

A fibroadenoma is a very common benign (not cancer) breast condition. Fibroadenomas often develop during puberty so are mostly found in young women, but they can occur in women of any age.

At what size should a fibroadenoma be removed?

There are no strict size criteria for excision of fibroadenomas; however, some studies suggest removal of fibroadenomas that are larger than 2 to 3 cm. Other indications for surgical resection of a fibroadenoma include discomfort, growth on imaging/exam, or uncertain pathologic diagnosis.

Do all fibroadenomas need to be biopsied?

In some cases, fibroadenomas may show very active or “atypical” cells on a biopsy. Fibroadenomas with atypical cells will usually need to be removed surgically and examined. Small lesions that look like fibroadenomas on ultrasound may not require biopsy. These may be followed up with an ultrasound scan instead.

When should a fibroadenoma be biopsied?

Fibroadenomas that become larger should be excised without delay. In patients with a family history of breast cancer, or known changes of complex fibroadenoma, we recommend excisional biopsy shortly after diagnosis has been established. Management of a fibroadenoma (FA) in women younger than 35 years of age.

Why do fibroadenomas hurt?

Often women find that their fibroadenoma gets tender in the days before their period. Pushing or prodding at the lump can also make it tender. Researchers do not know what causes fibroadenomas. We do know that they are quite common, especially in women aged between 15 and 25.

What happens if fibroadenoma is left untreated?

Fibroadenomas do not usually cause any complications. It is possible that a person may develop breast cancer out of a fibroadenoma, but this is highly unlikely. According to research, only around 0.002 to 0.125 percent of fibroadenomas become cancerous.

Does fibroadenoma increase breast size?

A fibroadenoma might feel firm, smooth, rubbery or hard and has a well-defined shape. Usually painless, it might feel like a marble in your breast, moving easily under your skin when examined. Fibroadenomas vary in size, and they can enlarge or shrink on their own.

How long does a fibroadenoma surgery take?

The procedure takes about 1 hour. The surgeon makes a small cut on your breast. The cancer and some of the normal breast tissue around it is removed. A pathologist examines a sample of the removed tissue to make sure all the cancer has been taken out.

Can fibroadenomas grow back after removal?

After a fibroadenoma is removed, it's possible for one or more new fibroadenomas to develop. New breast lumps need to be assessed with a mammogram, ultrasound and possibly biopsy — to determine if the lump is a fibroadenoma or might become cancerous.
